Florida Main Street Chitlin Circuit Historic Research and Documentation Project

Seeking to utilize the legacy of Chitlin’ Circuit sites as a form of an economic redevelopment strategy, we collaborated with Florida Main Street to provide historic research, documentation and a comprehensive list of Chitlin’ Circuit venues and sites for the designated Florida Main Street programs of Deuces Live in St. Petersburg, Eatonville, Lincoln Park in Fort Pierce, and Glenwood in Panama City as well as LaVilla in Jacksonville. This effort resulted in a comprehensive report and associated website. The Chitlin’ Circuit was the collective name given to a series of black-owned nightclubs, dance halls, juke joints and theaters that were safe and acceptable for African American entertainers to perform in during segregation.

In addition, our Main Street experience includes assisting in the creation of the Fernandina Beach Main Street program and collaborating a Florida Main Street Resource Team on-site economic strategy for Main Street Opa-locka. Most recently, we compiled and submitted a successful Main Street application for the Eastside neighborhood in Jacksonville, making it the first Main Street in the city.
