State Historic Markers

Historic African American School Markers

State historic markers are a visible reminder of our history, and an effective way to share history, especially for buildings that no longer exist, sites where important events took place, or places associated with certain people. We have experience successfully submitting Florida Division of Historical Resource marker applications, working directly with alumni, for three African American school sites in Nassau County, Florida: Peck High School, Pine Forest Community School, and Bryant Academy. Project work includes drafting statements of significance for the sites. These markers tell the story of how schools served as an anchor for students, families, and the larger community during Jim Crow-era Florida. As part of the Peck High School marker project, a series of month-long programming around the history of Peck, a Rosenwald school, was created. The story of Peck was also shared at the National Rosenwald Schools conference in 2015.

Additional experience includes drafting the significance statement and coordinating the marker application for the Arthur Lee McDuffie Florida state historic marker in Miami, Florida.
